Jan Fabre likes to be inspired by his ‘warriors of beauty’. Over the years, he has created several solo projects for them, including dance solos and theatre monologues such as Angel of Death and Another Sleepy Dusty Delta Day (with Ivana Jozic) Preparatio Mortis (with Annabelle Chambon), Quando l’uomo principale è una donna (with Lisbeth Gruwez), Attends, attends, attends… (pour mon père) (with Cédric Charron) and Drugs kept me alive (with Antony Rizzi).
Regardless of how diverse these solo performances are, Jan Fabre essentially always wants to pay tribute to the performer.
With this new solo, Fabre wants to honour the generosity of one of his warriors of beauty: Matteo Sedda. Sedda is an Italian dancer who was part of the original cast and creative process of Mount Olympus. To glorify the cult of tragedy (a 24-hour performance).
The playful performer has a high kinetic intelligence. In The generosity of Dorcas he uses body and space as a needle and thread. With untamable energy, he works on a grand imaginary sewing pattern to which the letters on stage refer. Under a rainbow of needles he graciously peels off the layers that determine his gender/identity. Sedda transforms from male to female, and everything in between, while he charmingly and generously welcomes the audience in his imaginary world.
The name Dorcas refers to a biblical figure that took care of the poor by handing out clothes. For Fabre and Sedda this generosity is the starting point in their research of the vibrating body, the body in ecstasy.
The dancer as the crux of the matter. Smart, transformative sorcery. - Helmut Ploebst | DER STANDART
Almost casual and at the same time highly concentrated, weightless and with gestural humour, the virtuoso dancer develops a movingly clever solo. Fabre's stage signature, together with Matteo Sedda's body expressions, creates an extremely lasting performance experience. - Bernadette Lietzow | TIROLER ZEITUNG
He oscillates between male and female, radiating in defiance of all efforts. To an original composition by Dag Taeldeman, Sedda provides the best performance to date in dance at the topclass ImPulsTanz festival. - Silvia Kargl | KURIER
Warrior of beauty, Matteo Sedda, enlightened by a laic inner faith which transcends him everywhere, punctuates the stage with his ardent presence, giving himself sensuously to the waves of music with their paroxysmal stresses which animate him and cause him to dance to their beat. - Yves Kafka | INFERNO MAGAZIN
Matteo Sedda
Dancer, performer and choreographer Matteo Sedda has been collaborating since 2014 with Troubleyn/Jan Fabre for the performance Mount Olympus – To glorify the cult of tragedy (2015) and the solo The generosity of Dorcas (2018). In 2021 Matteo was on stage in Fabre's new creation The fluid force of love.
