At the request of the theatre festival in Avignon Fabre created a solo and chose to work with the Icelandic dancer, Erna Omarsdottir for this. During this raw and powerful dance performance the dancer slowly transforms into a dog which crawls across the stage, sniffing and licking. She is surrounded by suspended and supine stuffed dogs and one live dog. The main theme is the song, ‘Le Chien’, by Léo Ferré, which was also featured in Fabre’s last production. Festive hats are used, turning the whole performance into a party for the dead. Clumps of butter are thrown onto the stage, fed to the dogs and the dancer also uses it to lather her body. She communicates with the audience, her eyes glaring fiercely at them and she unleashes the animal within. Her body continuously changes: a rebellious, dog-like, girly or female creature, which takes on nuance and depth, as a result of her body language, which alternates between dancing and moving. She is no longer a uniform character. Omarsdottir embodies the loneliness of the artist, who continuously is required to prove himself. When he fails he is cast out like a dog onto the streets.
